Photograph 1a - Amherst school front. | |
| A resent photograph showing the front of the old Amherst Primary school in Riverhead. This school has sadly closed and most of us who were kids at the school have fond memories. To the left of the school is the gate for the main entrance. This is where the milk was delivered and the milk monitors had to go and bring the crates of milk up the path and into the side door.History: The Amherst family, in particular the latter Jeffery Amherst who had gained a commision in the army and was fighting a war in Montreal, Canada, returned to Riverhead in 1764 and built a Mansion called Montreal to commemorate his victory. When he built Montreal, he gave some land for a School, a Vicarage and a Church. |
