Welcome to Chris Sutton's Amherst Primary School website. The Amherst school website shows photographs and information on the original Riverhead Amherst primary school. This school is now closed but the building still stands on Amherst hill in Riverhead, just north of Sevenoaks in Kent. If you have any information about or photographs of this school, please email them to me so that I can include them on the site.

Photograph showing the front of Amherst Primary School in Riverhead

A resent photograph showing the front of the old Amherst Primary school in Riverhead. This school has sadly closed and most of us who were kids at the school have fond memories. To the left of the school is the gate for the main entrance. This is where the milk was delivered and the milk monitors had to go and bring the crates of milk up the path and into the side door.

History: The Amherst family, in particular the latter Jeffery Amherst who had gained a commision in the army and was fighting a war in Montreal, Canada, returned to Riverhead in 1764 and built a Mansion called Montreal to commemorate his victory. When he built Montreal, he gave some land for a School, a Vicarage and a Church.
