Photograph of the walk along the old Westerham Valley
railway starting from the Chipstead village end. This part of
the walk goes along the top of the bank on a single path covered
by trees. On the your left as you are walking east, there
is this concrete block with threaded rods. There was a signal
documented around this location, about a mile out from Dunton
Green main line station. Is this the base?
Stuart currie has sent me the following information:-
I walked the line many times before they took the track up. The concrete block shown I remember very well. It is a signal base, I remember when they converted the signals around Blackeath and Eltham Well Hall from Semaphore to colour light concrete blocks the same were made to bolt the colour light signal posts onto. I wonder though was it ever used, was a block made to convert the Dunton Green branch distant signal from semaphore to colour light but the line closed before it was used. I say that because I remember the nuts and washers were still on the threads and if a signal post was taken away the nuts and washers would have been thrown away.
Thank you Stuart for supplying this information.
